The time period between breast surgery for the index cancer and a histopathologic diagnosis of invasive cancer or ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) in the contralateral breast was calculated, and the frequencies of detected cancers within 24 months were compared between the two groups with a Fisher exact test.

BACKGROUND: The impact of age and adjuvant therapy on contralateral breast cancer (CBC) risk and prognostic significance of CBC were evaluated. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In 45,229 surgically treated stage I-IIIA patients diagnosed in the Netherlands between 1989 and 2002 CBC risk was quantified using standardised incidence ratios (SIRs), cumulative incidence and Cox regression analysis, adjusted for competing risks. Studies comparing the prognosis after contralateral breast cancer (CBC) with that after unilateral breast cancer (UBC) shows conflicting results. We assessed the risk of breast cancer-specific death for women with metachronous CBC compared to those with a UBC in 8,478 women with invasive primary breast cancer registered in the Guy's and St. Thomas' Breast Cancer Tissue and Data Bank. The annual average risks of ipsilateral breast cancer in the three groups were 2.7%, 1.4%, and 1.1%, respectively (P = 0.06). BRCA1 pathogenic variant carriers had significantly higher risks of contralateral (hazard ratio 1.91, P < 0.001) and ipsilateral (hazard ratio 2.00, P = 0.02) breast cancers than non-BRCA1/2 pathogenic variant carriers. The absolute number of breast cancer survivors who are at risk for metachronous contralateral breast cancer (mCBC) has dramatically increased.

2015-08-05 · Introduction. Contralateral breast cancer (CBC) is today treated as a new primary tumor, independent of the first breast cancer (BC1). However, whether the second tumor (second breast cancer (BC2)) always is a new independent primary breast cancer, or in some cases could represent a metastatic spread from BC1, remains unclear. The most common of these second cancers is contralateral breast cancer (CBC), which is estimated to occur at a rate of 0.5% per year . CBCs are often more difficult to treat than the original cancer because of more resistant biology and inability to reuse previous effective therapy due to dose-limiting toxicities ( 6–8 ).

There are a number of different treatments doctors recommend. Of course, your specialist is the main person whose advice you should follow but it doesn't do anyone harm Breast cancer is the second most common cancer found in women — after skin cancer — but that doesn’t mean men aren’t at risk as well. We aimed to develop and validate a CBC risk prediction model and evaluate its applicability for clinical decision-making. Each year, a new primary cancer develops in about 14 of every 1000 women with breast cancer, and half of these cancers occur in the contralateral breast.

Contralateral breast cancer prognosis

In a multivariable analysis, controlling for age at diagnosis, year of diagnosis, treatment, and other prognostic features, contralateral mastectomy was associated with a 48% reduction in death from breast cancer (hazard ratio 0.52, 95% confidence interval 0.29 to 0.93; P=0.03). Contralateral breast cancer has worse prognosis than initial primary breast cancer Posted: September 4, 2012 Contralateral breast cancer refers to a tumor in the untreated, or opposite, breast. Women who are diagnosed with breast cancer in one breast are at increased risk of subsequently developing breast cancer in the opposite breast. Although rates of contralateral breast cancer among young women with stages I-II disease undergoing CPM were independent of ER status, women with ER-positive tumors in the absence of prophylactic mastectomy also had a lower overall risk for contralateral breast cancer than women with ER-negative tumors (0.46% vs 0.90%, difference = 0.44%; P Breast cancer survivors are at risk for contralateral breast cancer (CBC), with the consequent burden of further treatment and potentially less favorable prognosis. We aimed to develop and validate a CBC risk prediction model and evaluate its applicability for clinical decision-making.

Of the 20 women who died between years 10 and 20, 11 (55%) had experienced a second primary cancer (three ipsilateral, nine contralateral).
